Duncan Hamilton Ice SculptorIce Sculptor Profile

Duncan has worked as a chef for some of the best restaurants in London, including: the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, Mirabelle, Le Caprice and The Dorchester.

While at The Dorchester, an opportunity came up to sculpt ice for a party. When no one stepped forward Duncan decided to have a go and the rest, as they say, is history.

There is a long tradition of ice sculpting in the culinary world, but Duncan opened Hamilton Ice Sculptors – the first dedicated professional ice sculpting business in London – just over 40 years ago. For 12 years, he was also the only professional ice sculptor in London.

One of Duncan’s favourite jobs was sculpting a polar bear to draw attention to their plight and the effects of global warming. His specialities are the classic sculptures, such as swans and fish, but he also enjoys the lure of an abstract carving.

    Hello Duncan,
I couldn’t help eavesdropping your conversation today during the pottery class. It left me very curious. So I came home and googled ice sculpture Duncan and bingo! Found your website. It’s brilliant. This picture of yours is fantastic! Who’s done it?
I read and watched the videos and got some of my questions answered. But there’s more. Do you produce the gigantic blocks of ice? How big is your workshop? How early do you have to work before the opening of the exhibition in order for everything to be sharp? I understood the sculptures don’t melt completely, but do they keep to the fine detail as we don’t have an arctic environment? How long does the exhibition last?
Must confess, I haven’t yet been to Winter Wonderland, will certainly not miss the next one.
