Why do ice sculptures not melt?

One of the most commonly asked questions about ice sculptures is: ‘How do they not melt?’

The answer is simple; they do.

However the rate at which they melt can be reduced.

Keeping the ice sculptures in cold conditions will help, but the time it takes for them to melt depends on several factors.
Primarily, the larger the sculpture, the more time it will take to melt.

Although it can feel sad to watch a magnificent sculpture slowly melt away, we feel it adds something special.

Your sculpture will morph throughout the day, changing into a more abstract work of art that everyone can appreciate.

How long can an ice sculpture last?

Ice sculptures generally last more than 12 hours at room temperature, but it depends on the size, the intricacy of the design and where they are presented.
The fine detail of a sculpture will start to disappear within the first four hours, but the shape should last much longer.

After a dozen hours of the sculpture being kept consistently at room temperature, it is estimated that up to 70 per cent of it should remain.

However, if you can keep it in colder conditions, that lifespan can be prolonged.
That is why ice sculptures are popular at events in countries with colder climates and particularly harsh winters.

You should always try to avoid positioning ice sculptures in direct sunlight, especially during the warmer months of the year.

Locating them in the coolest part of the room, away from any windows and in the shade, should help to preserve them for longer.
That said, a shorter lifespan can be appealing for an event because an ice sculpture becomes a unique piece that only those attending will be privileged enough to see.

What happens as the ice melts?

All ice sculptures are supplied with drip trays, tubing and lighting to ensure that melted ice is collected. From there, it travels through a small tube and into a container.

The latter can easily be stored and hidden under a table, so you don’t have to worry about puddles.
The table must be strong enough to support the weight of a sculpture which, for reference, can weigh up to 120kg.

You will need to plan, making sure there is a table available that is strong enough and won’t collapse.
In ice bars, a sculpture is usually freestanding.

All melted water is drained into a specially-designed base that ensures there are no puddles and you won’t be left with a water-damaged floor.
