For over 40 years, our team have created incredibly detailed and intricate ice sculptures for events around the globe, and we are often asked how we do it? Well, in this article, we will be answering some of the key questions we are most commonly asked!
How is an ice sculpture made?
This is the most common question our team is asked, and the answer is simple. No matter how big or small the ice sculpture, the techniques we use are exactly the same. The first step to creating an icy masterpiece is drawing up the design for the client to sign off and for the sculptor to work from.
Once we are ready to start sculpting, we will retrieve the appropriately sized ice blocks from our on-site freezer. To carve out the general shape of the sculpture, our team will begin by using a chainsaw to quickly slice off large chunks of ice. Once a rough outline has been created, our sculptors will chisel, sculpt and shape the ice, carefully carving in the intricate details without damaging the piece.
Our team will sometimes add dyes for colour or LED lights to complete the ice sculpture, depending on the clients’ requirements.
How long do ice sculptures last?
The life span will depend on the size of the sculpture and where it is placed. For instance, if you have an ice sculpture outdoors in the summer, it won’t last long, whereas sculptures in more temperature-controlled settings will last much longer.
At room temperature, an ice sculpture should last over 12 hours, with the finer details becoming less distinguishable in the first 4 hours. However, placing the sculpture in the coldest area of the event and setting it up at the last possible minute will allow it to last as long as possible.
How do ice sculptures not melt?
Ice Sculptures will inevitably melt, but how fast this happens can be reduced. By keeping your sculpture in colder spaces and away from direct sunlight and heat sources, you can help your sculpture to last for longer. That being said, we think there is something quite beautiful about seeing how the ice moves and changes over time, morphing into an interesting abstract art piece.
